Legos are toys, but they are also the source of amazing designs. LEGO artists make use of the small plastic bricks to create everything from robots to architecture. Engineers from the company also create new elements that enable builders to construct more complicated models. Erik Varszegi, a Master Builder with the Lego Group in Billund, Denmark created a new feature this year: the curving slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted shapes while adhering to the company’s strict colour palette. The slopes can also be used to create a more dynamic shape, like an angled staircase.
While certain Lego designs are the creations of professional designers, others are the result of the popular Lego Ideas set-design program. The Ideas line lets anyone design a set and it is able the best lego design constructions to be made. It provides fame and 1% of sales for any designer who convinces 10,000 other designers that their work is worthy of being be made. It’s not a surprise that the most elaborate and stunning sets tend to get the most praise, especially when they have iconic characters or scenes from movies or television shows in real life.
One of the most impressive Lego designs are two iconic space-themed models including the NASA space shuttle Discovery and a model of the Hubble Telescope. Each comes with display plaques and a tiny Lego model of the scientist who developed the telescope. Other impressive models include a framed Rainbow and a Steampunk Dragon and a model of Westminster Palace.
